FINAL ASAC SHOW AT UAG SPACE!! 10/22/16
Come join us as we celebrate what has been a 9-year collaboration and partnership between the ALBANY SONIC ARTS COLLECTIVE and the UPSTATE ARTISTS GUILD!
For this gala fundraising celebration event, we will be presenting live music, spoken word/poetry, and special video projections from former ASAC members. It's bound to be a great night, and though we will be sad to say goodbye to our home space on Lark Street, rest assured ASAC will continue!
The UAG will also continue, though not in the current Lark Street space. All of the proceeds from this final celebration event will go to the UAG as a thank you for the support they have given to ASAC over the years. These funds will help UAG continue as they search for a new gallery space in Albany.
Please consider coming out on Saturday - either to enjoy the music, hear some poetry, or to donate some much needed funds to the Upstate Artists Guild. Every dollar is appreciated!! And if you can't make it, you can still donate - let us know and we will help make sure your donation gets to the UAG.
Here are the details on the show. Please note the early start time! You will not want to miss any of this - music will start promptly and will include lots of surprises and magical moments.

Public Speaking is the music of Brooklyn composer/ multi-instrumentalist
Jason Anthony Harris. Working with voice, electronics, piano, guitar,
and percussion, he crafts meticulous experimental music that focuses on
rhythm and texture. Harris balances adventurous methods with an intimate
compositional aesthetic.
Since 2012, Public Speaking has toured the U.S. performing music for voice, synth, found objects, radio and guitar pedals. 2013 brought his debut LP on Fabrica Records, “Blanton Ravine.” Harris has released albums that conflate vocal songs with abstract noise and polyrhythmic process pieces, and a collection of ambient recordings “Line & Weight” on Already Dead Records. Along with dancer Kendra Isobel Samson, he performed the collaborative piece “Pounds” for live music and movement at New York’s historic Judson Church in 2013. A cassette of the instrumental ambient-noise release “MOUNTAINMURALS” was released in June ‘15 on Tape Drift Records. INSECT FACTORY is music from Washington DC area musician Jeff Barsky. Insect Factory focuses on texture and mood, building layers of dense sounds that slowly evolve into hypnotic and atmospheric drones.
Since the 90's, Barsky has played in bands and improvisational collectives, and he has performed all over the U.S., in Canada, throughout Europe, and Japan. He has shared the stage with the likes of Nels Cline, Lungfish, and Carla Bozulich. He has also performed at the Suoni Per Il Popolo festival in Montreal, Terrastock 7 in Louisville, KY, and D.C.’s Sonic Circuits,
Queering Sound, and Fringe Festivals.
Among notable releases, Insect Factory released a split 7" with RST (New Zealand) and the Melodies from a Dead Radio LP (Fabrica/Insectfields) in early 2012, both which received
critical acclaim. Insect Factory has released many short run cassettes and CDs (available digitally) and has a new LP scheduled for release in August, 2016.
Some of Barsky’s current projects include the Arlington based post-punk-improv band Plums, Kohoutek (Philadelphia based psych-improv), and Sunset to the Sea, a duo with guitarist Chris
Brokaw.

“Barsky sculpts a beautiful aural “rainbow in curved air” that reminds me of some of the finest minimalists and static drone-drifters” - Terrascope
“…densely layered loops, planes of static standing tall like a gigantic backscratcher of audio, improvised melodies clamoring over drones like they’re peaks in a mountain range… It’s lovely, monolithic, moving, fluid and entirely lovely.” – Tiny Mix Tapes
“Music that evokes the feel of a plane ride through the clouds and the surreal world of dreams…Insect Factory's music grows with repeated listens.” - The Wire
“…woozy and warbly, wheezing melodies, layered textures, softly distorted and dreamily chaotic.” – Aquarius Records

BONNIE KANE
(Holyoke, MA)
Dedicated improvisor and electro acoustic pioneer, Bonnie Kane's music lives equally in the avant-garde, hard core and psychedelic arenas. Integrating saxophone, flute, feedback and electronics, her work travels through genres of noise, free jazz and improv, psych rock, jam band, and bio-composition, manipulating sound into magic.

DEI XHRIST
(Manchester, NH)
Dei Xhrist is a mulitdisciplinary artist working with sound, performance, and sculpture. She began performing music in 2006, spinning loops and lock grooves on multiple record players. Voice was initially added as a background element, supporting Theremin and less conventional sound sources to create audio cutups and soundscapes. Xhrist’s voice, now her dominating instrument, has been favorably compared to Diamanda Galas. She uses glossolalia, concrete poetry, American primitive, and belle voce with a graceful stage presence that has been known to morph in to a physical assault past the fourth wall.

The ALBANY SONIC ARTS COLLECTIVE presents:

Kurdi/Margolis/Wright: [Chicago IL, Chester NY, Lowell MA]

Walter Wright - drums, electronics

Matt Weston - solo percussion + electronics
http://mattweston.com/
$5 suggested donation for the touring musicians.
Muyassar Kurdi (voice), Al Margolis (tapes & electronics) and Walter Wright (circuit bending and video synthesis)
MUYASSAR KURDI
“Chicago resident Muyassar Kurdi is the final act, delivering a Dadaistic performance that falls between musical absurdity and autistic choreography. Completely concentrated upon her bizarre ritual, the singer – dressed in black – emits tortured vocalisations and cries worthy of Yoko Ono in full flight, all of it juggling with electronic effects and white noise. It’s incredibly in-your-face and perturbing but makes you smile too: the sheer pleasure of making a racket…”
~ Mulhouse in L’Alsace (France)
Kurdi is a musician, performance artist, dancer, filmmaker and educator from Chicago, Illinois.
In performance, she explores the relationship between abstract sound and meta-primordial movement, obliquely confronting ideas of masculine subjugation by re-appropriating and then distorting hegemonically, sexualised, figurative motion and juxtaposing it with random, abrasive and jarring acoustic and electronic sound components along with wordless vocalisations.
http://muyassarkurdi.com/
AL MARGOLIS aka If, Bwana
A recent review of Margolis’s work says: “Let it be declared that Al Margolis/If, Bwana is some sort of evil genius working with raw materials which are never adapted to a genre or a context, because they create one in that very moment. Those sources are radically altered up to an utterly unrecognizable state, anarchic manifestations moving in compact determination.” (Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes). Margolis has been an activist in the 1980s American cassette underground through his cassette label Sound of Pig Music; was co-founder of experimental music label Pogus Productions, which he continues to run. Active under the name If, Bwana since 1984, making music that has swung between fairly spontaneous studio constructions and more process-oriented composition. He has recorded and/or performed with Pauline Oliveros, Ione, Joan Osborne, Monique BuzzartĂ©, Katherine Liberovskaya, Adam Bohman, Ellen Christi, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jane Scarpantoni, Ulrich Krieger, David First, and Dave Prescott, among others.
http://www.ifbwana.com/
WALTER WRIGHT is an interdisciplinary artist, his practice includes computer programming, electro-acoustic music, and video performance. His focus is on “improvisation as a way of being present in the world.” Wright was one of the first video animators. At Computer Image Corp he animated letters, words, and titles for Children’s Television Workshop. He was a video animator for Ed Emshwiller’s Thermogenesis and Scapemates, aired by WNET’s Artists Television Workshop. Scapemates was the first computer graphics video nominated for an Emmy Award (1971). He showed his work at the first computer art conference at the Kitchen (NYC, 1973). In 1973-76, as artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center, he pioneered video performance touring public access centers, colleges, and galleries with the Paik/Abe Video Synthesizer.
Wright has developed software and hardware for artists including the Video Shredder, a desktop video processor for the TARGA2K. Currently he works with Max/MSP, softVNS, and Processing. His programs and sketches are available on his blog – nohtv.wordpress.com
Wright performs with several groups including Egregoros, ensemble indent and Tough Day Tubing. He plays a Bugbrand Board Weevil, a Flower Electronics Little Blue Boy, contact mics by Crank Sturgeon, drums and percussion. He recently toured with an amplified drum kit and is experimenting with Martin Freeman’s Horndog and Peter Blasser’s Shnth. Wright is a co-founder of 119 Gallery, the first digital art gallery on the World Wide Web, located in Lowell MA.
https://nohtv.wordpress.com/
MATT WESTON Matt Weston plays percussion and electronics, and has performed throughout the US and in Europe. He has appeared on CNN, VH1, and CBS TV.
He has studied and/or collaborated with Arthur Brooks, Bill Dixon, Kevin Drumm, Paul Flaherty, Charles Gayle, Milford Graves, Mary Halvorson, Le Quan Ninh, Bob Marsh, Ben Miller (ex-Destroy All Monsters), Roger Miller (Mission of Burma), Jim O’Rourke, William Parker, Ken Vandermark, Jack Wright, and many others.
His work has earned critical praise from such publications as the Wire, the Village Voice, Signal To Noise, Cadence, All About Jazz, Grooves, and Bananafish. His solo works have garnered international acclaim, as have his recordings with Barn Owl, Tizzy, and Thrillpillow.
He has recorded for the Tautology, Sachimay, Breaking World Records, Imvated, Crank Satori, BoxMedia, and Drag City labels. He currently records for his own 7272Music label.

MAZOZMA & KATRINA DIXON'S FRIGID SIGIL
MA Turner has been churning out the good stuff for years, first under the banner of Warmer Milks, alternating between spiky noise-rock and adventurous songwriting...stoked to have him and Katrina doin their thing in Albany.
PIGEONS w/PG SIX
Pigeons dropped one of 2015's choicest LPs--"the Bower", on MIE Records--and their blissful vibe is anchored by the shredding and singing of Wednesday Knudsen and Clark Griffin. Elegant, restrained, and intelligent, Pigeons will be ably assisted by PG Six for this performance.
RAMBUTAN+PARASHI
These Albany experimentalists and Burnt Hills bandmates have dropped 2 collab tapes in the past few years, on SicSic and Tape Drift. Their bleak, stark sounds blend together seamlessly. Elements of dub and music concrete resonate throughout their warm analog noise. This performance will be their first live action as a duo.

HOLLAND HOPSON RETURNS!!! W/ Blacklight Lighthouse and D. Rice!
ASAC welcomes back HOLLAND HOPSON for a rare area performance!
Holland Hopson performs new and traditional Appalachian music for banjo.
Holland's music expands traditional Appalachian tunes and techniques with live, interactive electronics. Expect a mix of old-time folk music with contemporary electronic flourishes--Roots music for the 21st century.
Holland's latest CD, Post & Beam, was called "…a haunting, often mesmerizing album of old songs and new sounds" by Michael Eck of the Albany Times Union. Listen online at http://
Press and Reviews:
Holland was named "Best Retro-Futurist" in Metroland's Best of the Capital Region for 2010. "Hopson’s recent blending of traditional tunes (performed with vocals and banjo) and subtle electronics has turned him into one of the area’s most mesmerizing and memorable live performers. Catch him if you can, as his local shows tend to be few and far between."
"...vocalist-banjo player Holland Hopson magnificently melded old-
timey roots music with 21st century technology..."
--Greg Haymes, The Albany Times Union, 1 October 2009
"Hopson, in particular, is a must-see performer, a musical treasure hiding right under our noses."

Helga Fassonaki, a recent transplant to New York City, creates and curates sound and visual installations, group situations, films, and performances that utilize and question temporality, power structures, subcultures and the human body as a sculptor of sound in space.
Floating between worlds of sound and visual art, Fassonaki borrows from one to set up the rhythms and pulses that inform the other. Fassonaki collaborates with New Zealander Andrew Scott in the free-psych duo Metal Rouge. Their Three for Malachi Ritcher album was included in the Public Collector’s exhibit in the 2014 Whitney Biennial and Experimental Sound Studio’s Audible gallery in Chicago. She also heads her own brand of noise in her solo project yek koo, exploring the body as a vehicle for the movement of sound. She is co-founder and director of Emerald Cocoon, a record label founded in 2008 devoted to releasing music from the ‘empty quarter’ – an area where the aesthetics of punk meet the philosophies of free jazz. In 2012, she began a series of staged hagiographies called Touching Them, Touching Me. In the first one, A Love Song for the Dead C, Fassonaki (re)created a post-punk era New Zealand bar at Human Resources gallery in Los Angeles. Uniting artists and musicians, the exhibition culminated in a 3-day performance series, Trapdoor Fucking Exit. Her Radio Concept Tour (2014-present) explores the relationship between body, microphone and air movement transmitted through radio waves. Her recent project Khal investigates the idea of a ‘living score’ by initiating a passage of visual scores, actions, and conversations between participating artists and the public. Iterations of it will be featured as a traveling exhibition in the US and NZ in 2015 at Glasshouse (Brooklyn, NY), LACA (Los Angeles, CA), Disjecta (Portland, OR), Audio Foundation Gallery (Auckland, NZ), and Nga Taonga Sound & Vision (Auckland, NZ) and other spaces TBA.
Gabie Strong is a California based artist and designer exploring spaces of degeneration, drone and decay as a means to improvise new arrangements of self-reflexive meaning. To explore the arena between exteriority and interiority, she uses sound performance, radio broadcasting, sculpture, photography and video as a mediums for experimentation. In looking for the differential, Strong invokes noise to summon the invisible.
Strong is currently exploring themes of spatial decay through her KCHUNG Radio program Crystalline Morphologies. Crystalline Morphologies is a platform for broadcasting experimental music, noise, sound art and field recordings. The project title conceptually links minimalism and materiality to ambient sound and noise. Strong produces live, collaborative sound performances as "Crystalline Morphologies," inviting experimental sound and visual artists

MENSHEVIKS is an Albany-based improvisational quartet with a heavy emphasis on electronics. Although the four members also perform solo and with multiple other groups, Mensheviks is a wholly unique endeavor with an approach all its own. Matt "MV" Valentine + WOVOKA + FOSSILS FROM THE SUN!
Matt "MV" Valentine
Wovoka
Fossils From the Sun
Sunday May 31
8 PM at The Low Beat
335 Central Ave Albany NY
Vermont's MATT VALENTINE (MV) is a cosmic sojourner of the highest order. Whether in his regular gig with Erika Elder or flowing on his own, MV's brand of rural psychedelia is unmistakable--his deep songwriting skills are matched by adventurous sonics and deft guitarwork. He's playing a few solo shows soon before his double LP "Midden Mound' drops this summer on the UK's mighty Golden Lab Records. Come see him at Albany's Low Beat on May 31!
If string theory is correct, this is approximately the thirteenth album Matt Valentine has released that definitely shouldn’t be filed under a group name (MV & EE, Tower Recordings, Bummer Road, Golden Road, etc.). On the other hand, if string theory is correct, this might also be his 11,000th album. The truth, one suspects, is somewhere in between. It’s actually his 2nd record of “songs”. Since bedding down in southern Vermont at the dawn of the century, MV has been as cussedly prolific as anyone but the general approach here is as naked-and-loaded as the soul of Icepick Slim.
As usual, MV’s tunes and procedures beggar easy generification. El- ements of deep forest psychedelia brush against Crazy Horse guitar / vocal flourishes that explode to reveal volk-based form mayhem at its hickiest. This guy has the magic touch.
- BYRON COLEY
“The MV half of MV&EE creates tense, cosmic music with very little. His meandering voice and sparkling guitar sound lonely, weird, and oddly comforting. A good match, actually, for some of Philip K. Dick’s obsessions: identity, authen- ticity and transformation.”
“the hypnotic effect is like sitting in a car in the desert, turning the radio dial, and stumbling upon ancient transmissions returning from deep space.”
“more effusive guitar effects and an occasional bend into a warped doo-wop or rural blues sensibility. The only problem with this strange addition to the ever- expanding body of work inspired by PKD is that it is not a whole album”

Joining MV on the bill will be Fossils from the Sun and Wovoka. Ray Hare plays in Century Plants and Burnt Hills, and his Fossils from the Sun project is an unpredictable one, as likely to utilize guitar as drum machine and synthesizer. One constant is Ray's voice, bent and mutated under layers of delay and distortion. John Lynch also plays in Burnt Hills, and his Wovoka project specializes in a hazy, homegrown back-porch psych vibe. Wovoka's released an LP on Time-Lag, while Ffrthesun has a number of releases on labels like Digitalis, Tape Drift, and Skell.
