Since establishing himself as a preeminent voice in contemporary electro-acoustic study, Jason Lescalleet has, through his solo work and in collaboration, exploded the notion of what is possible within the realm of tape-based music. His recorded catalog acknowledges a diversity of application, from lo-fi reel-to-reel soundscaping and work for hand-held cassette machines, on through to digital sampling and computer generated composition. Lescalleet's live actions further expand his ouevre to include work with video, dance, performance art and multi-media concerns.
In the past two decades, Lescalleet has gradually and painstakingly compiled a compelling discography on notable labels such as Erstwhile, RRR, Intransitive Recordings, Kye, Celebrate Psi-Phenomenon, Hanson Records, Chondritic Sound, and most recently via his own Glistening Examples imprint. He has collaborated with Graham Lambkin, Phill Niblock, Joe Colley, John Hudak, Rafael Toral, Thomas Ankersmit, Ron Lessard (as Due Process), Joachim Norwall (Skull Defekts), and CM Von Hausswolff, among others, and during this time he’s built a solid reputation for delivering a visceral live experience in concert.
He currently lives in Maine, where he works and operates the Glistening Examples publishing label and the Glistening Labs studio for audio recording and mastering services.

Ocean Roars 1000 Drums is a musical testament to the words attributed to Heraclitus: 'We both step and do not step in the same rivers; we are and are not.' Formed in 2009 in New York, the trio consists of Todd Capp (drums and cymbals), Bryan Eubanks (soprano saxophone and electronics) and Andrew Lafkas (bass and synthesizer). Their music carves a deep groove in the flow of time, drawing in a continuous circulation of textures that obscure any difference between entropy and stillness.

Drekka's Michael Anderson channeled his vision into Drekka with extensive tours of the US and Europe, audio & visual collages, and side projects such as 4K, Turn Pale, and lovesliescrushing. Drekka's previous works run parallel to Edward Artemiev's soundtracks for Andrei Tarkovsky, Simon Fischer Turner's abstractions for Derek Jarman mixed with more contemporary groups like Nurse With Wound or Coil. Ethereral folk that takes on a tranquil lullaby quality, layered and textured, deconstructed and rebuilt to cause a quiet discomfort. Utilizing his endless personal sound library in a manner unique to Anderson, these compositions are arranged more like a film, showing us a glimpse into Drekka's soundtracks to films unmade.

KBD is a trio of experimental musicians who have been playing together since 2006. Its members are Michael Kimaid -drums and electronics, Gabriel Beam- guitar and electronics, and Ryan Dohm- trumpet and electronics.

In 2007, KBD released their debut full length: [four plus one], on the Eh? Music Label. Although Ryan Dohm moved to Los Angeles a year later, they maintain a musical relationship based on those first formative years together. Not long after Dohm’s departure, Kimaid and Beam carried on and continue to play as KBD(uo), releasing an EP called Candid on FTAM and follow up full length on Eh?, Any Port In A Storm. In 2013, KBD(uo)released a DVD entitled Drop The Remainder on the New Orleans based multimedia label The Language Foundry, and a cassette release entitled Loss/Gain on the RCN label from Akron, Ohio. In the meantime, they have released a slew of independent releases available in limited runs at their shows.

In 2014, KBD returns as a full trio for an East Coast Summer tour.

In search of the same sound, an upright bass no longer functions in the supporting role and a guitar is not used as a melodic or chordal instrument. An instrument is only a tool used to achieve the whole palette of sounds. All hierarchy of pitch, rhythm and form are abolished. Any structures that occur arise independently and organically. From the highest to lowest frequencies and from the purest tones to the noisiest textures, all are achievable.

FINNISH NIGHT with KUUPUU & TSEMBLA!!

The Albany Sonic Arts Collective is very happy to announce a night of incredible Finnish music, with two very special solo artists performing.

Kuupuu

  and

Tsembla

Thursday June 19 @ 8PM
Upstate Artists Guild
247 Lark Street
Albany, NY

Kuupuu is a solo-project of Finnish artist/musician Jonna Karanka. She's been involved in such psyche/improv/neofolk groups as Hertta Lussu Ässä, Avarus, The Anaksimandros, Kukkiva Poliisi, Hockey Night, Olimpia Splendid, Way Of The Cross etc. Kuupuu plays partly improvised spooky boogie with tapes, loops, samples, beats, keyboards, effects and voices. Her live sets are time travels through unfound galaxies, deserted huts, nightmares, dirty doghouses, sweet cakes and cranberry lakes - letting the melodies find their own ways and settle or unsettle in the whole.  Kuupuu has released records from 2003 onwards on such labels as Dekorder, Time-Lag Records, Cabin Floor Esoterica, Threshold Tapes and Foxy Digitalis. Two latest Kuupuu releases (Sous Juju & Sisar) were released by Japanese EM Records in the summer of 2013. Next Kuupuu 7” will come out this summer from Jan Anderzén’s Vauva label.

***************************************************************
Tsembla is the musical work of Marja Johansson, a Swedish-Finnish artist living and working in Turku, Finland. Utilizing a wide range of instruments, electronics, objects and samples, the music of Tsembla rides on waves of warped melodies, fluttering rhythms, abstract voices and mutating textures, crossbreeding the known and the imaginary. Nouskaa henget (Spirits, rise!, 2013) is her third release, after the 7” Tuplafiesta, released by Jan Anderzén’s Vauva label in 2009 and the LP Fauna on the Finnish Ikuisuus label in 2011. Loosely assembled, rough edged compositions, rich in details, come together into odd instrumental miniatures in an almost-pop format, venturing into fourth world territory from a lattering, wheezing and boiling DIY kitchen inspired by Moondog, Ruth White, Raymond Roussel, LAFMS, Jon Hassell, Anton Bruhin, René Daumal, Suzanne Ciani and folk musics of the Andes and Asia. Two of the tracks on the album are made in collaboration with flute wizard Antti Tolvi (of Rauhan Orkesteri, Lauhkeat Lampaat etc.) layering up Tolvi’s overdubbed flutes with hand percussion, tape snippets and electronics.

MORE TBA!

Keir Neuringer is a musician and interdisciplinary artist who is involved in creative arts communities in Poland, Holland, and the US. He has cultivated a personal and intensely physical approach to saxophone improvisation, plays analogue electronics and Farfisa organ, and sings and narrates text. After training as a composer and jazz saxophonist in the US, he spent two years on a Fulbright research grant in Krakow. He lives in Philadelphia and continues to travel widely to present his work, collaborating closely with Rafal Mazur, Ensemble Klang, and Julius Masri, among many others.

Antti Tolvi is a self-taught, multi-talented musician. He has played in numerous bands including Lau Nau, Rauhan Orkesteri, and Lauhkeat Lampaat. Born in ’77 in Panelia on the west coast of Finland, he began making music with his brothers, untutored. From 2000-2001 he studied classical Indian music in Varanasi, and this marked a turning point in his perception of music. On returning to his native Finland, he became embroiled in Free Jazz for a number of years, until a recent relocation to the countryside pushed him ever more towards solo improvisation – deriving inspiration from, in Antti’s own words, “harmonies, overtones, going into sound, no ends, no starts, from nothing comes something, just perfect, peace”.

‘Pianoketo’ can be seen as a culmination of Antti’s musical experiences to date. Featuring three extended meditations on a theme, all played on solo piano, it is a sound that defies categorisation, with nods towards classical, avant-garde, improvisation, psych, free jazz and Indian music. A shimmering flux of tones and harmonies, each of Pianoketo’s pieces seem to collect notes as they gather momentum, expanding and shifting form as Antti breathes life into them. At times, it is almost as if there are two instruments, the overtones working like feedback, playing counter-melodies as notes weave through each other. Antti’s technique combines neatly with the personality of the instrument to convey an evocative, psychedelic nostalgia.

****************

First spellbound by freely improvised music in the mid-1990s after witnessing performances by TEST, William Parker, Cecil Taylor, and others, Chris Corsano began a long-standing, high-energy partnership with Paul Flaherty in 1998. A move from western Massachusetts to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to develop an expanded solo music of his own, incorporating sax reeds, violin strings and bows, pot lids, and other everyday household items into his drum kit. In February 2006 he released his first solo recording, The Young Cricketer, and toured extensively throughout Europe, USA, and Japan. He spent 2007 and '08 as the drummer on Björk's Volta world tour, all the while weaving in shows and recordings on his days off with the likes of Evan Parker, Virginia Genta, and C. Spencer Yeh. Moving back to the U.S. in 2009, Corsano returned focus to his own projects, most notably a duo with Michael Flower, Rangda (with Sir Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny) and solo work, now revamped to include synthesizers and contact microphones in addition to his drum set and home-made acoustic instruments.

In addition to the those mentioned above, he's also worked with, among others: John Edwards (released by: Clean Feed/Dancing Wayang), Jim O'Rourke & Akira Sakata (Drag City/Family Vineyard), Paul Dunmall (ESP-Disk), Nels Cline (Strange Attractors), Jessica Rylan (Load Records), Jandek (Corwood), Sunburned Hand Of Man (Manhand), MV&EE (Eclipse/Time-Lag), Vampire Belt (Open Mouth), Joe McPhee (Roaratorio), and Wally Shoup (Leo/Columbia Japan).

*****************
Jefferson Pitcher is a guitarist and composer originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. He spent his formative years involved in the DIY Berkeley punk-rock scene, at 924 Gilman Street, which still influences him today. While much of his work explores free improvisation, he also draws heavily on his gift for melody, as well as on the simple repetitions of minimalism, the space and North African influence of flamenco, and a history of performing and recording in the West Coast indie-rock scene as a singer-songwriter, where he fronted the band Above the Orange Trees.

Since that time, Pitcher has released music with Standard Recording Co. (USA), Digitalis Recordings (USA), Camera Obscura (Australia), Tape Drift Records (USA), Moonpalace (Spain), Dutch East India (USA), Words on Music (USA), Tract Records (USA), and his own Mudita Records (USA). He has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists including Pauline Oliveros, Fred Frith, Ikue Mori, Okkyung Lee, Scott Amendola, Rosie Thomas, Christian Kiefer, J. Matthew Gerken, Denison Witmer, Sarah Weaver, Mark Dresser, Mike Bullock, Tim Keiper, Doug Van Nort, Jonathan Chen, David Gibson, Kristina Forester, Ron Guensche and many more. He has twice been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and has been well reviewed by Pitchfork, Blurt, The Melbourne Sun, Prefix, and Harp magazines.

Pitcher holds an MFA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he studied improvisation and composition with Pauline Oliveros and Neil Rolnick. He is married to author and visual artist Keri Smith, and can often be found on some hilly country road riding his bicycle while daydreaming about the minutiae of guitars and the endless wonder of sound.

Meg Duffy is lead vocalist and guitarist for Hand Habits.  She deals in psychedelic pop/dream rock sounds with an emphasis on pretty and sad melodies, reverb, and guitar freakouts with simple but meaningful structures.  Jason Cosco is a core member of the Albany Sonic Arts Collective, and also plays in Albany's noise legends Grab Ass Cowboys, as well as performing solo.

Nick Hennies is a percussionist and composer from Louisville, KY currently residing in Ithaca, NY. His work is primarily concerned with an immersive, psychoacoustic presentation of sound brought about by an often grueling, endurance-based performance practice that Nathan Thomas of Fluid Radio described as, "a highly sophisticated and refined performance technique...that starts and ends with listening and encourages a different way of listening from its audience." He received his M.A. in percussion from the University of California-San Diego in 2003 where he studied with renowned percussionist Steven Schick and is also a member of Meridian, a percussion trio with Tim Feeney and Greg Stuart. Prior to relocating to Ithaca Hennies was based in Austin, TX for ten years where he performed with the Austin New Music Co-op, The Weird Weeds and a variety of other projects. Hennies is also an interpreter of the work of other modern composers having recorded and performed music by John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Jandek, Peter Ablinger, Kunsu Shim, Jürg Frey, Ellen Fullman, Radu Malfatti, Arnold Dreyblatt and many others. His work as both composer and performer can be heard on a wide variety of labels including Quakebasket, Senufo Editions, Accidie, Quiet Design and many others. In 2013 Hennies also founded the record label Weighter Recordings for releasing his own work and other new and unusual music by living composers.

soundBarn is the duo project of Thomas Lail and Patrick Weklar. Previous performances have been fantastic, giving space for these cats to conjure strange worlds of otherness from their various guitars and preparations. Not to be missed.

Mensheviks is the collaborative group comprised of Matt Weston, Ray Hare, Mike Griffin, and Eric Hardiman. Each of these folks should be well known by ASAC audiences in other configurations, but if you haven't seen them perform together under this guise, come check it out. Each performance finds Mensheviks exploring new zones and sonic vistas.

See you there!
