<br />
<br />
Come join us as we celebrate what has been a 9-year collaboration and partnership between the <b>ALBANY SONIC ARTS COLLECTIVE</b> and the <b>UPSTATE ARTISTS GUILD</b>!<br />
<br />
For this gala fundraising celebration event, we will be presenting live music, spoken word/poetry, and special video projections from former ASAC members. It's bound to be a great night, and though we will be sad to say goodbye to our home space on Lark Street, rest assured ASAC will continue!<br />
<br />
The UAG will also continue, though not in the current Lark Street space. All of the proceeds from this final celebration event will go to the UAG as a thank you for the support they have given to ASAC over the years. These funds will help UAG continue as they search for a new gallery space in Albany.<br />
<br />
Please consider coming out on Saturday - either to enjoy the music, hear some poetry, or to donate some much needed funds to the Upstate Artists Guild. Every dollar is appreciated!! And if you can't make it, you can still donate - let us know and we will help make sure your donation gets to the UAG.<br />
<br />
Here are the details on the show. Please note the early start time! You will not want to miss any of this - music will start promptly and will include lots of surprises and magical moments.<br />

<b>INSECT FACTORY</b> is music from Washington DC area musician Jeff Barsky.
Insect Factory focuses on texture and mood, building layers of dense
sounds that slowly evolve into hypnotic and atmospheric drones.<br />
Since the 90's, Barsky has played in bands and improvisational
collectives, and he has performed all over the U.S., in Canada,
throughout Europe, and Japan.<span class="text_exposed_show"> He has
shared the stage with the likes of Nels Cline, Lungfish, and Carla
Bozulich. He has also performed at the Suoni Per Il Popolo festival in
Montreal, Terrastock 7 in Louisville, KY, and D.C.’s Sonic Circuits,<br /> Queering Sound, and Fringe Festivals.<br />
Among notable releases, Insect Factory released a split 7" with RST
(New Zealand) and the Melodies from a Dead Radio LP
(Fabrica/Insectfields) in early 2012, both which received<br /> critical
acclaim. Insect Factory has released many short run cassettes and CDs
(available digitally) and has a new LP scheduled for release in August,
2016.<br /> Some of Barsky’s current projects include the Arlington based
post-punk-improv band Plums, Kohoutek (Philadelphia based psych-improv),
and Sunset to the Sea, a duo with guitarist Chris<br /> Brokaw.<br /> <br /> <a href="http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.insectfields.org%2F&h=jAQH7ie2e&enc=AZOCEM_sbjb2RYxZkNTcJP3u9OEBg7LIKgT0TjIs1ng5in-BE-aa8XgHGrPasKRH2tw&s=1" rel="nofollow nofollow" target="_blank">http://<wbr></wbr><span class="word_break"></span>www.insectfields.org/</a><br /> <a href="http://insectfactory.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow nofollow" target="_blank">http://<wbr></wbr><span class="word_break"></span>insectfactory.bandcamp.com/</a><br />
“Barsky sculpts a beautiful aural “rainbow in curved air” that reminds
me of some of the finest minimalists and static drone-drifters” -
Terrascope<br /> <br /> “…densely layered loops, planes of static standing
tall like a gigantic backscratcher of audio, improvised melodies
clamoring over drones like they’re peaks in a mountain range… It’s
lovely, monolithic, moving, fluid and entirely lovely.” – Tiny Mix Tapes<br /> <br />
“Music that evokes the feel of a plane ride through the clouds and the
surreal world of dreams…Insect Factory's music grows with repeated
listens.” - The Wire<br /> <br /> “…woozy and warbly, wheezing melodies, layered textures, softly distorted and dreamily chaotic.” – Aquarius Records</span></span>Albany Sonic Arts Collectivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00263466085552552621noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7023680792238504848.post-52566180090758503002016-05-17T07:59:00.000-07:002016-05-17T08:01:23.455-07:00Tinkle/Motl + 1983 + Ffrthsun!!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">A recent review of Margolis’s work says: “Let it be declared that Al
Margolis/If, Bwana is some sort of evil genius working with raw
materials which are never adapted to a genre or a context, because they
create one in that very moment. Those sources are radically altered up
to an utterly unrecognizable state, anarchic manifestations moving in
compact determination.” (Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes). Margolis has been an activist in the 1980s American cassette
underground through his cassette label Sound of Pig Music; was
co-founder of experimental music label Pogus Productions, which he
continues to run. Active under the name If, Bwana since 1984, making
music that has swung between fairly spontaneous studio constructions and
more process-oriented composition. He has recorded and/or performed with Pauline Oliveros, Ione, Joan
Osborne, Monique Buzzarté, Katherine Liberovskaya, Adam Bohman, Ellen
Christi, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jane Scarpantoni, Ulrich Krieger, David

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b>WALTER WRIGHT</b> is an interdisciplinary artist, his practice includes computer
programming, electro-acoustic music, and video performance. His focus is
on “improvisation as a way of being present in the world.” Wright was one of the first video animators. At Computer Image Corp
he animated letters, words, and titles for Children’s Television
Workshop. He was a video animator for Ed Emshwiller’s Thermogenesis and
Scapemates, aired by WNET’s Artists Television Workshop. Scapemates was
the first computer graphics video nominated for an Emmy Award (1971). He
showed his work at the first computer art conference at the Kitchen
(NYC, 1973). In 1973-76, as artist-in-residence at the Experimental
Television Center, he pioneered video performance touring public access
centers, colleges, and galleries with the Paik/Abe Video Synthesizer.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Wright has developed software and hardware for artists including the
Video Shredder, a desktop video processor for the TARGA2K. Currently he
works with Max/MSP, softVNS, and Processing. His programs and sketches
are available on his blog – nohtv.wordpress.com</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Wright performs with several groups including Egregoros, ensemble
indent and Tough Day Tubing. He plays a Bugbrand Board Weevil, a Flower
Electronics Little Blue Boy, contact mics by Crank Sturgeon, drums and
percussion. He recently toured with an amplified drum kit and is
experimenting with Martin Freeman’s Horndog and Peter Blasser’s Shnth. Wright is a co-founder of 119 Gallery, the first digital art gallery on the World Wide Web, located in Lowell MA.

School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) with a focus in conceptual
art, he is musically self-taught and has developed a cadre of
idiosyncratic techniques that are all his own. Flandrew has been
involved in the free improvisation sound and movement community since

<b>GABIE STRONG<br /><br />FZFG (Chris Bassett solo project)<br /><br />Wed. July 8th - 8PM<br />Upstate Artists Guild <br />247 Lark St.</b><br />
<b>Albany <br />$5 suggested donation for the traveling musicians.</b><br />
See you there!!<br />
<br />
<b>Helga Fassonaki</b>, a recent transplant to New York City, creates and curates sound and visual installations, group situations, films, and performances that utilize and question temporality, power structures, subcultures and the human body as a sculptor of sound in space.<br />
<br />
Floating between worlds of sound and visual art, Fassonaki borrows from one to set up the rhythms and pulses that inform the other. Fassonaki collaborates with New Zealander Andrew Scott in the free-psych duo Metal Rouge. Their Three for Malachi Ritcher album was included in the Public Collector’s exhibit in the 2014 Whitney Biennial and Experimental Sound Studio’s Audible gallery in Chicago. She also heads her own brand of noise in her solo project yek koo, exploring the body as a vehicle for the movement of sound. She is co-founder and director of Emerald Cocoon, a record label founded in 2008 devoted to releasing music from the ‘empty quarter’ – an area where the aesthetics of punk meet the philosophies of free jazz. In 2012, she began a series of staged hagiographies called Touching Them, Touching Me. In the first one, A Love Song for the Dead C, Fassonaki (re)created a post-punk era New Zealand bar at Human Resources gallery in Los Angeles. Uniting artists and musicians, the exhibition culminated in a 3-day performance series, Trapdoor Fucking Exit. Her Radio Concept Tour (2014-present) explores the relationship between body, microphone and air movement transmitted through radio waves. Her recent project Khal investigates the idea of a ‘living score’ by initiating a passage of visual scores, actions, and conversations between participating artists and the public. Iterations of it will be featured as a traveling exhibition in the US and NZ in 2015 at Glasshouse (Brooklyn, NY), LACA (Los Angeles, CA), Disjecta (Portland, OR), Audio Foundation Gallery (Auckland, NZ), and Nga Taonga Sound & Vision (Auckland, NZ) and other spaces TBA. <br />
<br />
<b>Gabie Strong</b> is a California based artist and designer exploring spaces of degeneration, drone and decay as a means to improvise new arrangements of self-reflexive meaning. To explore the arena between exteriority and interiority, she uses sound performance, radio broadcasting, sculpture, photography and video as a mediums for experimentation. In looking for the differential, Strong invokes noise to summon the invisible.<br />
<br />
Strong is currently exploring themes of spatial decay through her KCHUNG Radio program Crystalline Morphologies. Crystalline Morphologies is a platform for broadcasting experimental music, noise, sound art and field recordings. The project title conceptually links minimalism and materiality to ambient sound and noise. Strong produces live, collaborative sound performances as "Crystalline Morphologies," inviting experimental sound and visual artists Albany Sonic Arts Collectivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00263466085552552621noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7023680792238504848.post-36272250698489310152015-06-29T10:16:00.002-07:002015-06-29T10:16:33.135-07:00Fleisenberg-Kenas-Collins Duo + Paper Balls + Parashi!!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Vermont's MATT VALENTINE (MV) is a cosmic sojourner of the highest
order. Whether in his regular gig with Erika Elder or flowing on his
own, MV's brand of rural psychedelia is unmistakable--his deep
songwriting skills are matched by adventurous sonics and deft
guitarwork. He's playing a few solo shows soon before his double LP
"Midden Mound' drops this summer on the UK's mighty Golden Lab Records.
Come see him at Albany's Low Beat on May 31!<br /> <br /> If string theory
is correct, this is approximately the thirteenth album Matt Valentine
has released that definitely shouldn’t be filed under a group name (MV
& EE, Tower Recordings, Bummer Road, Golden Road, etc.). On the ot<span class="text_exposed_show">her
hand, if string theory is correct, this might also be his 11,000th
album. The truth, one suspects, is somewhere in between. It’s actually
his 2nd record of “songs”. Since bedding down in southern Vermont at the
dawn of the century, MV has been as cussedly prolific as anyone but the
general approach here is as naked-and-loaded as the soul of Icepick
Slim.<br /> <br /> As usual, MV’s tunes and procedures beggar easy
generification. El- ements of deep forest psychedelia brush against
Crazy Horse guitar / vocal flourishes that explode to reveal volk-based
form mayhem at its hickiest. This guy has the magic touch.<br /> - BYRON COLEY<br /> <br />
“The MV half of MV&EE creates tense, cosmic music with very little.
His meandering voice and sparkling guitar sound lonely, weird, and
oddly comforting. A good match, actually, for some of Philip K. Dick’s
obsessions: identity, authen- ticity and transformation.”<br /> <br /> “the
hypnotic effect is like sitting in a car in the desert, turning the
radio dial, and stumbling upon ancient transmissions returning from deep
space.”<br /> <br /> “more effusive guitar effects and an occasional bend
into a warped doo-wop or rural blues sensibility. The only problem with
this strange addition to the ever- expanding body of work inspired by
PKD is that it is not a whole album”<br /> - BRAINWASHED<br /> <br /> LINKS:<br /> <a href="http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fmvandee.blogspot.com%2F&h=hAQGIms4D&enc=AZPDxbD1QvqNoC-MDJ2fiLFTdB_VBbSksp4WUbxEZY5lNm-_cPAW63lP10UV6Qsv88k&s=1" rel="nofollow nofollow" target="_blank">mvandee.blogspot.com</a><br /> <a href="http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fmv-ee.com%2F&h=AAQELCDys&enc=AZMW3Dmoy-Q04rcX6ki0QkmvCWhJ4SF0y9UuQOuvwb1FB8TAh07APxv8EbA7yVscYJc&s=1" rel="nofollow nofollow" target="_blank">mv-ee.com</a><br /> <a href="http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FMV_%2526_EE&h=2AQHZuNim&enc=AZO63-SCq8YO3FpQzbsNPlojSmCuTI8ngE0X-Gq4b5DAt5Y1ZWfhKz0Lcm0ky8ApS4A&s=1" rel="nofollow nofollow" target="_blank"><span>http://en.wikipedia.org/</span><wbr></wbr><span class="word_break"></span>wiki/MV_%26_EE</a><br /> twitter: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FMVEEGoldenRoad&h=5AQGvyaTQ&enc=AZNUDHmAtHZX2jVFsBgF9PFDeL5S9UBawjdDc3GfsGS5EEmz9P5LXWFs5_yxrsTuqo8&s=1" rel="nofollow nofollow" target="_blank"><span>https://twitter.com/</span><wbr></wbr><span class="word_break"></span>MVEEGoldenRoad</a><br /> facebook: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/mattMVvalentine" rel="nofollow"><span>https://www.facebook.com/</span><wbr></wbr><span class="word_break"></span>mattMVvalentine</a><br /> facebook: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/MV-EE/162854533776883" rel="nofollow"><span>https://www.facebook.com/</span><wbr></wbr><span class="word_break"></span>pages/MV-EE/162854533776883</a><br /> <br />
Joining MV on the bill will be Fossils from the Sun and Wovoka. Ray
Hare plays in Century Plants and Burnt Hills, and his Fossils from the
Sun project is an unpredictable one, as likely to utilize guitar as drum
machine and synthesizer. One constant is Ray's voice, bent and mutated
under layers of delay and distortion. John Lynch also plays in Burnt
Hills, and his Wovoka project specializes in a hazy, homegrown
back-porch psych vibe. Wovoka's released an LP on Time-Lag, while
Ffrthesun has a number of releases on labels like Digitalis, Tape Drift,
and Skell.<br /> <br /> Don't miss this one! <span class="fsl">The Albany Sonic Arts Collective is proud to present a
return appearance by the amazing Arthur Brooks Ensemble V. Also
performing will be the one and only Crank Sturgeon!!<br /> <br /> Saturday May 2<br /> 8:00 PM<br /> Upstate Artists Guild <br /> 247 Lark Street in Albany<br /> <br />
Trumpeter-composer Arthur Brooks is one of the unsung heroes of the new
music. In his 40+ year career he has collaborated with such legendary
figures as Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor, Sonny Sharrock, and Alan Silva. For
over 20 years he taught alongside Dixon in the Black Music Division at
Bennington College.<br /> <br /> Arthur Brooks - trumpet, flugelhorn<br /> Jeremy Harlos - bass<br /> Anthony Santor - bass<span class="text_exposed_show"><br /> Matt Weston - percussion<br /> <br /> <a href="http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwwwsoundcloud.com%2Farthurbrooksensemblev&h=vAQEdXsjS&enc=AZOHJSpUlMs34b5aguEg_5RFIhK6RNE3ABwbyqSqPRngSWvF-7x9jAPn_YBG1EMszfE&s=1" rel="nofollow nofollow" target="_blank"><span>http://wwwsoundcloud.com/</span><wbr></wbr><span class="word_break"></span>arthurbrooksensemblev</a><br /> <br />
Crank Sturgeon has empathy for the travails of Wile E. Coyote, but
that's not where the story ends. Attending art school provided
Crank with a tactical sensibility in where to place his future
catapults. Sometimes this has required that he transform
himself into an inflatable snow globe for an audience. Then there are
periods when it's all about performing for months on end, wearing only a
ventilation tube. Nevertheless, Crank Sturgeon has been at it for over
two decades and countless timezones. Whether he's directing an
orchestra using cue cards, fingerprinting six hundred art patrons'
middle fingers, or leading a midnight parade -- wearing thirty gallons
of water in each pant leg -- these impositions create an
intersection between <br /> comfort and calamity. It is this
junction, the marriage of unlikeable strategies with cocksure
optimism, that has become Crank Sturgeon's trademark.<br /> <br /> In
addition to his performance work, Crank directs technical
workshops on how to be noisy and has participated in heaps of
cultural programs and art residencies that condone this

Come join us for another incredible night sponsored by the Albany Sonic Arts Collective. Following a massively successful show featuring Chris Corsano and Bill Nace, we've got just what you need to usher in Spring! <br /><br />What to expect? Stunningly hypnotic swells of drone, textural ambience, blissful noise, and more! This is Derek's first ever East Coast appearance too!<br /><br /><b>DEREK ROGERS (Dallas, TX)<br />ROB FORMAN (Dallas, TX)<br />RAMBUTAN (Albany)<br /><br />Wednesday April 8th <br />Music at 8PM<br />Upstate Artists Guild <br />247 Lark St.<br />Albany, NY</b><br /><b>DEREK ROGERS</b> (born 4 September 1980) is an American musician active in electronic composition, drone, free-improv, glitch, ambient, and noise textures. He utilizes laptop processing as well as traditional instrumentation and field recordings to create emotionally resonant instrumental soundscapes. Rogers is predominantly known as a prolific solo artist, having released some 50+ albums since 2007, and has recently collaborated with musicians such as Marcus Rubio, A.F. Jones, and Lee Noble in the duo Circuit Rider UK. Currently, he is based in Dallas, TX.<br /><br />"...makes me think not of faded memories or summer haze, but brains and stimulus, input and output – the chemical and mathematical nature of experience. It’s moving too – parts make me want to lie down for a while – but the best of Prevais lights up my gray matter." -- Marc Masters (Pitchfork Media)<br /><br />"[Mist & Drift] has two long pieces that are slow moving, complexly layered and dreamily beautiful...the second piece begins with field recordings, then moves into slabs of electronic sounds organized in a way that recalls a string quartet, before the shifts start to become more menacing. Very nice." -- Byron Coley (The Wire) <br /><br />"Derek Rogers is the underdog of ambient music in the tape scene. Having issued triumphant works of modestly epic, vibrantly understated sounds on a bevy of imprints that read like a rap sheet of modern legends (Bathetic, Scotch, 905, Jehu & Chinaman, Obsolete Units, Hausu Mountain, Patient Sounds, Tape Drift, et al,), Rogers maintains a precise balancing act between glitching, grotesque, achingly stoic, and disarmingly beautiful. Although Rogers’ canon varies from release to release, you can count on each being a sincerely moving set of music." -- Bobby Power (Decoder Magazine)<br /><br />"...electronic musician Derek Rogers is a genius when it comes to balancing minimalism with dense, abstract ideas. His expert sense of patience, mood and timbre was stunningly exemplified in his Circuit Rider UK collaboration with Lee Noble out on Jehu & Chinaman earlier this year, garnering much praise." -- Diego Aguilar (Decoder Magazine) <br /> <b><br />ROB FORMAN</b>, formerly of Western Mass, returns from his new home in Dallas TX for a rare performance of creative sound generation. Whether as a member of Non-Event, the head of the Sedimental record label or as a radio DJ, Rob has always focused his attention on the curatorial side of the experimental music scene. Recently moving into performance zones, Rob has been indulging a long-gestating musical idea that was based on a conversation he and Paul Collegio (a fellow WZBC DJ) had many years ago regarding their love for and fascination with lock grooves. As an avid vinyl collector with a diverse taste in music, he has identified dozens of lock grooves throughout his record collection to draw from. The project is both highly personal, riffing on his collection and his DJ work, and also one that taps into a rather arcane form of “sampling.” Working exclusively with these hidden run-out lock grooves on pre-existing recordings as source material, he creates hypnotic and unpredictable sound collages that work both sides of the familiar and preternatural. <b><br /><br />RAMBUTAN</b> is the solo project of Eric Hardiman, co-founder of the Albany Sonic Arts Collective. He also plays in Century Plants, Burnt Hills, Twilight of the Century, Location Ensemble, Insects Waiting, and Mensheviks.Albany Sonic Arts Collectivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00263466085552552621noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7023680792238504848.post-81963519794297922832015-03-25T08:57:00.003-07:002015-03-25T08:58:57.969-07:00CORSANO/NACE/BACZKOWSKI + Parashi + Ffrthsun !!!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span class="fsl">Another stunning night of improvised jams sponsored by
the Albany Sonic Arts Collective! If you haven't seen Chris Corsano,
Bill Nace, or Steve Baczkowski, please DO NOT MISS THIS!! To say these
guys are at the TOP of the game would be a understatement.<br /> <br />
We're beyond thrilled to be hosting what is sure to be one for the ages.
And regular ASAC jammers Parashi and Fossils from the Sun will round
out the night to make things even better. BE SEEING YOU!<br /> <br /> <b>THURSDAY MARCH 26th @8:30 PM (doors@8:00)<br /> Upstate Artists Guild <br /> 247 Lark Street <br /> Albany, NY</b><br /> <br /> BACZKOWSKI/NACE/CORSANO (reeds/guitar/drums)<br /> <br /> PARASHI (solo electronics)<span class="text_exposed_show"><br /> <br /> FOSSILS FROM THE SUN (solo electronics + vox)<br /> <br /> Timeline:<br /> 2002: Baczkowski (reeds) meets Corsano (drums) and the two play with Paul Flaherty in an old Buffalo ice house<br /> <br /> 2002: Corsano & Nace (guitar) form Vampire Belt in what was once a Western Massachusetts bait shop<br /> <br /> 2005: Nace & Baczkowski meet in a town famed for its hockey sticks and first play together in a converted ice rink<br /> <br /> 2014: The trio records their first record, Stolen Car, scheduled for release on Golden Lab Records, Spring 2015<br /> <br />
Multi-wind instrumentalist Steve Baczkowski lives in Buffalo, NY where
he works as a conduit for creative music of any & every sort.
Baczkowski began playing alto saxophone at age eight, switched to
baritone by the time he was twelve, and has since developed a wide array
of woodwind styles & formidable breathing techniques. In addition
to organizing the Buffalo Improvisers Orchestra, and the Buffalo Suicide
Prevention Unit, Baczkowski performs solo, in duos with guitarist Bill
Nace & percussionist Ravi Padmanabha, and in frequent collaborations
with numerous musicians in the Northeast & from around the world. <br /> <br />
"Ranging through the most disparate aspects of his timbral
unconsciousness, Baczkowski is nevertheless able to conjure up scents of
Ned Rothenberg and Peter Brötzmann, while also taking the opportunity
of sharing his own vision in diverse territories. His convolutions are
raging yet equally serene." - Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes<br /> <br />
Bill Nace is an artist and musician based in Western Massachusetts. He
has collaborated with an extraordinary range of musicians, including
Michael Morley, Mats Gustafsson, Joe McPhee, Chris Corsano, Jooklo Duo,
Chris Cooper, John Truscinski, Thurston Moore, Jake Meginsky, Jessica
Rylan, Paul Flaherty, Wally Shoup, and Kim Gordon, with whom he
regularly plays as one half of the duo Body/Head. Their critically
acclaimed LP “Coming Apart” was released on Matador in 2013. He has
been a featured musician in festivals such as ATP (curated by Jim
Jarmusch and held in Monticello, NY), Colour Out of Space(Brighton, UK),
Supersonic Festival (Birmingham, UK), International Festival Musique
Actuelle (Victoriaville, QC), and Homegrown (Boston, MA). He has
performed in a wide variety of venues, running the gamut from the Musee
d'Art Contemporain (Strasbourg, France) to The Stone (NYC) to Bennington
College (Vermont). Nace’s range has been described as “ veering from
sculptural, almost Remko-Scha-esque chime to Loren Connors-style
elegance in only a few short moves.” (Mimaroglu Music, 2010).<br /> <br />
Chris Corsano is a drummer who's been operating at the intersections of
free improvisation, avant-rock, and noise music since the late '90s.
He's worked with saxophonists like Joe McPhee, Akira Sakata, Paul
Flaherty and Evan Parker; guitarists such as Jim O'Rourke, Sir Richard
Bishop and Nels Cline; and also one-of-a-kind artists Björk and Jandek.
His style incorporates high energy free improvising, more textural work,
and augmenting the drum kit with everything from cello strings
stretched across the skins to disassembled saxophone parts.<br /> <br />
“Corsano, despite being arguably the most riotosly energetic and
creative drummer in contemporary free jazz, does far more than merely
bash his kit into submission. Playing loud does not mean abandoning
subtlety, and Corsano’s sudden shifts of texture and dynamics are a
wonder to behold” - The Wire</span></span>Albany Sonic Arts Collectivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00263466085552552621noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7023680792238504848.post-77306059603517455252015-02-10T06:50:00.000-08:002015-02-11T14:45:33.290-08:00ASAC presents Music+Poetry event on 2/26/15!!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Described twenty years ago as an "undergrounder by design," <b>Jack Wright</b> has been a saxophone improviser traveling through the US and Europe since the early 80s in search of interesting partners and playing situations. (Recent Europe Tours) Now at 72 he is well known for having brought improvised music into the heartland of America at a time when it was totally unknown. His musical range is as wide as his explorations, from fiery, breathless free jazz to quiet, breath-filled, and often animalistic sounds. A reviewer for the Washington Post said, "In the rarefied, underground world of experimental free improvisation, saxophonist Jack Wright is king". For more info: http://www.springgardenmusic.com/sgmhome.html,https://soundcloud.com/jackwright and http://jackiswright.wordpress.com/<br />
<br />
<b>Zachary Darrup</b> is an improvising guitarist currently living in Philadelphia. During his early teenage years in the rural coal region of Pennsylvania a strange boy appeared like an angel, carrying a large cd booklet of wild musics of all sorts. This chance meeting at a pizza shop, plus tumultuous relationships with his home turf, school teachers, and other agents of law and rule enforcement led Zach to drop out and skip town, devoting himself to following music wherever it would take him--somewhere else. His techniques are informed by the musical possibilities of film language, jovial mockery and mimicry of plants, animals, and audience members, thoughtful room listening, word play, colors, and culinary experiments.<br />
<br />
<b>Evan Lipson</b> (b. 1981), now from Chatanooga and soon to be from Providence RI. He has been active as a musician since adolescence. In an on-going pursuit of all things occult and aberrant, Lipson acquired an early interest in the lateral realms of visionary & experimental music -- seeking to transcend the existent paradigms of idiomatic expression. His formative experiences were in underground rock, modernist composition, freak pop, jazz, noise, as well as various modes of improvisation. Lipson cultivates a palpably intense and vehemently iconoclastic body of music, as exemplified by too long a list of notable groups, but including Satanized and Normal Love.<br />
<br />
<b>Michael Peters</b> is the author of the sound-imaging poem Vaast Bin (Calamari Press) and other assorted language art and sound works. Text and digital-based work has appeared in journals like GAFF, Polis, Barzakh, PEEP/SHOW, Bright Pink Mosquito, unarmed, SleepingFish, Word for/Word, BathHouse Hypermedia Journal, and Hyperrhiz: New Media Cultures, among many others. Visual-poetic manifestations are in avant-garde libraries, special collections, and have appeared in galleries, journals, and anthologies—The Last Vispo Anthology: 1998 – 2008 and the forthcoming Poets for Living Waters Anthology are the latest. Peters cut his sound-imaging teeth in the rock group Poem Rocket (Atavistic), and continues to explore sound-imaging in solo performances and installations, as well as in improvisational collaborations with the likes of Area C, Jack Wright, The Be Blank Consort, and Al Margolis (If, Bwana). He is currently working on a book about sound environment programming. http://www.michael-peters.com/<br />

<b>James Belflower</b> is a PhD candidate in contemporary poetry and poetics at SUNY Albany researching artists who intervene in Postmodern declarations of the “end of intimacy” by reassessing how sensory relationships complement new experiences of materiality, affect, and collectivity. He is the author of The Posture of Contour / A Public Primer (Spring Gun Press, 2013), Commuter (Instance Press, 2009), and Bird Leaves the Cornice, winner of the 2011 Spring Gun Press Chapbook Prize. His appears, or is forthcoming in: Aufgabe, Fence, and New American Writing among others. He co-curates the Yes! Poetry and Performance Series in Albany NY.<br /><br /><b>Matthew Klane</b> is co-editor at Flim Forum Press. His books include B (Stockport Flats, 2008) and Che (Stockport Flats, 2013). An e-chap, from Of the Day, has recently been published by Delete Press (deletepress.org). Other new work can be found in Horse Less Review, Lit, Harp & Altar, and word for / word. He currently lives and writes in Albany, NY, where he co-curates the Yes! Poetry & Performance Series and teaches at Russell Sage College.
